Car Sales in the European Market
The automotive market in Europe is one of the most important markets at the moment. The trend there is similar to that in America, where consumers are becoming more affluent and educated. This helps car manufacturers to grow their sales and numbers, with new models being introduced regularly.
Europe’s largest automobile market today is Germany, which also has the highest auto-related employment per capita out of any country worldwide and a high number of automobiles per 1000 people (120).
Types of europe car sales
The automotive market in Europe is broken down into the following five categories: car sales, truck sales, bus and coach sales, multipurpose vehicle / utility vehicle sales, and vans sales.
Car sales
The European car market is characterized by high concentration levels. The ten largest manufacturers in Europe accounted for 94% of the total production of cars in 2009. In some countries over half of all new car registrations were from just one manufacturer. In Britain for example 60% were from Ford alone.
Truck sales
As with cars, the top 10 manufacturers in Europe accounted for 93% of global sales in 2009. Europe had a low concentration of truck manufacturers and this is reflected in the process of vehicle development. The majority of new vehicle models developed by the European car industry are aimed at the mass market. Truck manufacturers on the other hand have to focus on niche markets and developing trucks with special characteristics. On average, over one-third of all vehicles sold by European truck makers are niche models and hybrids.
Bus and coach sales
Europe has a long tradition of public transport. This is reflected in the market for buses, coaches, minibuses and other vehicles used on set routes. Bus manufacturers in Europe tend to specialise in niche markets rather than mass transit vehicles.
Multipurpose vehicle / utility vehicle sales
The European car industry is concentrating its efforts on high-demand mainstream models rather than new models of specific types of vehicles, especially small cars and sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
Van sales
Van sales in Europe are characterized by a high level of competition between European and non-European manufacturers. The European van manufacturers are small, but they are very successful in building niche market models, such as sports utility vans and minibuses.
